Music Review: N.E.D., No Evidence Of Disease
3 stars out of 5

By Jason Gladu | Posted on November 14, 2009

Before we even get to the music, N.E.D. is a band with an important mission – all six members are gynecologic oncologists whose jobs are to help women and their families through cancer diagnosis. The reason for N.E.D.’s existence is to help promote the first annual Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Day and to help women become more aware of the symptoms of gynecological cancers.

The CD booklet is invaluable for every woman as it has a seven-page insert called “What Every Women Should Know,” which lists various cancers with the causes and treatments. It was a revelation for every family member that I showed it to and the whole booklet is available on the band’s website.

Musically, N.E.D is not the tightest band in the world; a little more rehearsing would have made all the difference. Then again, they do have another full-time job on their hands (saving lives). So, sounding like a coffeehouse mix of Pink Floyd and Fleetwood Mac still makes for an engaging listen, especially with insightful lyrics that follow a patient throughout the different stages of disease.
Tracks like “Rhythm Heals” and “Waiting on Time” are beautiful numbers filled with lush acoustic instrumentation; the only odd track out is the embarrassing “False Pretenses” that attempts to pull off a heavy metal sound that falls flat.

With so many bands just trying to fuel their own image and success, it is refreshing to see a band supporting and educating the public on such an important issue. (Motema Music)
