The Portland Phoenix By Michael Freedberg - Review
.. her gentleness allows the dancers to loosen up as they move from beat solos to vocal celebrations — something too often missing in today’s "trance" sessions

DJ Jackie Christie
MADE 4 U
(Radikal)

There have been many female disco DJs but not a lot in the more cultish world of house music. Into this hitherto all-male miniverse steps Jackie Christie with a debut CD full of diva voices, deep beats, gospel singing, and just enough trance electronica to give it all a touch of irony. The only false note here is the way she sometimes brings house music’s queer eye to the fore. The beauty of house is to make this eye a lens through which all of house’s worldwide fans — many of them mainstream kids, and pop — can see themselves. Still, one of the CD’s gayest songs, drag-queen Lady Bunny’s "It’s Tonight," talks up the disco life (looking good, feeling even gooder) in a way, and with a gentle high voice, that every dancer will say "Yeah!" to. Christie’s song selections and her sequencing of them owe a lot to David Morales, house’s most tuneful and ebullient DJ. And if her laid-back mixes lack the intensity of his, her gentleness allows the dancers to loosen up as they move from beat solos to vocal celebrations — something too often missing in today’s "trance" sessions — and back again. Best tracks: "Beautiful Day," the streetwise "Dirty Anthem," the title song, and, yes, Lady Bunny’s "It’s Tonight."
