ANTONIO CIACCACQ: RUSH LIFE. Italian native Ciacca is definitely emerging as a straight-ahead jazz pianist to watch. (You can catch him at 6 and 10 p.m. Saturday at Montage during the jazz fest.) He has a flexible touch that makes him easily at home on this disc in the lyrical “I Remember Clifford” or swinging through “ChipewhaCQ,” a clever reworking of the jazz standard “Cherokee.” This album puts Ciacca in the middle of a strong quintet, featuring saxophonist Stacy DillardCQ, trumpeter Joe MagnarelliCQ, drummer Rodney GreenCQ, and bassist Kengo NakamuraCQ. The music here is mostly first-class originals, augmented by the aforementioned “Clifford” and an intriguing Latin twist “On Green Dolphin Street.” The CD title track, “Rush Life,” is a winning play on Billy Strayhorn’sCQ classic “Lush Life.” – Jack Garner Whether or note you catch Ciacca at the fest, you can’t go wrong with this CD.
