Teaneck-based songstress Amy London and NYC bassist Sean Smith are artists who strive to find new directions within the mainstream jazz mode. Both display their wares this week at the intimate lounge at the Kitano, 66 Park Ave. at 38th Street, New York.

Tonight, London debuts a show built around the music and lyrics of Johnny Mercer, who wrote words to such classics as "Moon River" and "Come Rain or Come Shine." Her ace band comprises her husband, guitarist Roni Ben-Hur, bassist Nilson Matta, drummer Steve Williams, and saxophonist Dan Greenblatt. Tomorrow, Smith performs his vibrant, persuasive originals with saxophonist John Ellis, guitarist Keith Ganz and drummer Russell Meissner. Shows both nights at 8 and 10 p.m., no music charge, $15 minimum. Call (212) 885-7000 or visit kitano.com.
