2007-05-11 American Jewish World - Review Ben-Hur's new album showcases deft style
If fleet and sweet melodic jazz is to your taste, check out guitarist Roni Ben-Hur’s new album, Keepin’ It Open (Motema). Regarding the CD title, Ben-Hur notes, “Although I grew up in a small town in Israel, my mother had this ‘open door’ policy, which meant our home was always filled with music, food and passionate conversations, not only with family, but with neighbors, friends and often complete strangers.” Now living in New York City, Ben-Hur has assembled a combo of stellar jazz musicians for this release. In particular, trumpeter Jeremy Pelt and pianist Ronnie Matthews shine on their solos. Ben-Hur keeps everything open and together, and plays with passion on songs like Monk’s “Think of One,” “Recado Bossa Nova,” and on a couple of his own compositions. This is a wonderful follow-up to his previous album, Signature (Reservoir Music). How do we get Roni Ben-Hur booked at the Dakota or somewhere in town? — M.S.
