K.J. Denhert to perform new songs in Pawling

It's hard to pinpoint who K.J. Denhert sounds like exactly. "If Sting married Roberta Flack and had an affair with Rickie Lee Jones, I'd write the musical," the performer cracked during an interview earlier this week.

"I hear the term smoky vocals; Ruthie Foster, a Texas blues-woman called me that just last week when I popped into her show, which was phenomenal," Denhert said. "One Italian producer told me I sang like a blend of Sting and Joni Mitchell."

That's quite impressive. On Sunday, you can make your own comparison for the artist when she performs at Towne Crier Café in Pawling, N.Y., at 8 p.m.

Denhert will perform songs off her most recent release "Lucky 7." She also will release a live record called "KJ Denhert Dal Vivo a Umbria Jazz." The performer is no stranger to the Crier, having won its open mic competition some 10 years ago, and years later opening up for jazz-pop duo Tuck and Patty.

"I bought new shoes for that show and called them my 'Tuck and Patty opener shoes' –-- they were a kind of Beatle Boot, with a square toe," she said.

Denhert has also opened for Richie Havens, but admits she didn't buy new shoes that time out.

Audiences can expect to hear some beautiful tunes this weekend. As she said, "You'll hear a memorable modern take on folk music that blends with jazz and departs to places so very sensitive with exquisite rhythms, smoky vocals and an acoustic guitar sound. I call this urban folk and jazz."

She continued, "This time I am bringing the band from Dal Vivo, the band that opened for Alicia Keys in Italy this summer. We're a New York band, tight as a drum but no attitude. I promise you'll want to meet everyone of them and have them all sign the CDs."
