Jazz Weekly Antonio Ciacca Quintet Rush Life Motema Records By George W. Harris
There is something about the configuration of the hard bop quintet that was predestined to embody all that is right about jazz. Initiated by Horace Silver and Art Blakey, perfected by Miles, it has withstood the test of time. Pianist/composer Antonio Ciacca has taken the baton from his predecessors, and has put together a sturdy and swinging band consisting of Stacy Dillard (tenor), Joe Magnerelli (trumpet), Kengo Nakamura (bass) and Rodney Green (drums) that gives homage to the past classics, while adding modern ears and sounds to the picture. "Chipewha", for example 'noble' is a wide ranging cooker that has clever references to the more famous Indian tribe. "Riverdale" features Ciacca's assured-silver toned piano, while Dillard's rough n' Rollins tone is custom fitted for the warm title track. Magnerelli has an strong mid range and can curise with the best as on the lazy "Prince of Newark". Fans and friends of the classic Blue Note sound will be ecstatic over this beaut.
