Teaneck-based singer Amy London makes quite a statement on her debut CD. Boasting a lustrous, clear voice, she moves with gusto through an array of not-usually-heard standards, instrumental jazz pieces outfitted with lyrics, and covers of Jobim and Laura Nyro items. This is hardly your typical jazz vocal recording. Backed by a spiffy little big band mostly arranged by Chris Byars, London – married to guitarist Roni Ben-Hur – motors buoyantly through “Swinging the Blues” and “There’s a Boat That’s Leavin’ Soon for New York.” On the latter, bassist Rufus Reid’s meaty notes stand out. Cy Coleman’s “With Every Breath I Take” is done as a tender bolero; Nyro’s “Lazy Susan” is also slow and emotive. “It Could Be So Nice” finds London’s lyrics set successfully to a Elmo Hope bop number. “Ohio” and “Anyplace I Hang My Hat,” from two different Broadway shows, make a fine medley. Throughout, solos from trumpeter Richie Vitale, pianist John Hicks, trombonist John Mosca, Ben-Hur and Byars add flavor.
