Powerful Vocalist AMY LONDON swings it home with an “A” team of jazzerati on her Motéma debut: When I Look in Your Eyes
Street date - Oct 16; CD Release event at Dizzy’s Club-Coca Cola, Jazz @ Lincoln Center - Dec 17
Motéma Music, label for such acclaimed jazz artists as Rufus Reid, Lynne Arriale, Marc Cary and Roni Ben-Hur, is scheduled to release When I Look In Your Eyes, the new CD from vocalist Amy London, on September 18. Even before its release, the CD has garnered rave reviews from many of Amy’s top-talent peers, including internationally renowned pianist Fred Hersch, who said, “Amy London is a world-class singer possessing a beautiful and expressive vocal instrument…” and Grammy-award winning vocalist Mark Murphy, who remarked, “Amy London, where have you been hiding? Don’t leave us so long without another CD.” Vocalese Pioneer Annie Ross declares, “It is a total delight, I would recommend it to anyone.”
London recruited a New York City jazz dream team for this date led by producer Suzi Reynolds (Teri Thornton, Jerome Richardson, Rufus Reid and many others.) Also on board were veteran bassist Rufus Reid, the late, great pianist John Hicks (in what was one of his final studio projects,) as well as pianist Lee Musiker (Tony Bennett, Steve Tyrell, Mark Murphy,) drummer Leroy Williams (Thelonious Monk, Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins,) percussionist Steve Kroon (Luther Vandross), saxophonist Chris Byars leading a burning horn section and jazz guitar guru Roni Ben-Hur, who happens also to be Amy’s husband.
When I Look In Your Eyes features twelve tracks, by a diverse array of songwriters, ranging from Laura Nyro (“Lazy Susan”) to Cy Coleman “The Best Is Yet To Come” and “With Every Breath I Take”) to Antonio Carlos Jobim (“Passarim”) to Elmo Hope (London debuts her original lyrics to two of Hope’s classic be-bop compositions) The song selection is indicative of Amy’s vast emotional and musical range, and – as WBGO radio personality Sheila Anderson points out in her liner notes - firmly places Amy in the same elite league as female stylists Sarah Vaughn, Carmen McRae, Nina Simone and Shirley Horn, all of who are expert story-tellers adept at using their voices as instruments ‘within’, as opposed to ‘on top of’ thier ensembles.
Long working as a first call vocalist on the New York scene London has had many successes. Initially inspired by such sixties and seventies singer/songwriters as Laura Nyra and Joni Mitchell, London’s early vocal training with Milt Weiner, who coached Doris Day and Rosemary Clooney, soon led her to jazz, and inevitably to New York City. From her early gig with trumpeter Tom Browne, through work with top big bands and Latin bands, through stints with Charles Aznevour and the New York Voices and through three years as the lead singer in Cy Coleman’s six-time Tony award-winning Broadway musical, “City of Angels,” , and now with this tour-de-force recording, Amy’s abilities continue to impress.
In addition to performing, writing and recording, Amy is also a proud mother of two and an avid jazz educator. A lead teacher at New York’s acclaimed New School Jazz Vocal Program (which she helped to found,) she and also conducts workshops with her husband, Roni Ben-Hur, a key music educator in his own right and author of the book ‘Talk Jazz Guitar.’ London will tour to support When I Look In Your Eyes, beginning with a CD release event on December 17 at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Jazz@Lincoln Center.
